Mr. Bug Goes to Town

On January 16th Pacific Cinémathèque’s Education Department was proud to present a restored 35mm print of the Fleischer brother’s animated classic Mr. Bug Goes to Town (1941).

The film kicked off Cinema Sunday’s all new, all animated schedule for 2011 and was a hit with the enthusiastic audience of all ages.  One particularly pleased viewer blogged about the marvelous changes to the new print!

Following the screening (as with all Cinema Sundays) the Education Department led an activity in the lobby of the theatre. This month, audience members were invited to make their own early animation devices: the classic phenakistoscope

… and the thaumatrope.

It’s amazing how much fun adults have when making these little toys – almost as much as their kids!  You can imagine why Victorian party-goers were so impressed with the toys when they were popular in the 1800s.

To join in on the fun, make sure to come join us for Cinema Sunday screening of Pinocchio on February 20.  Not only is the film awesome (arguably Disney’s best) but we’ll be running another activity after the show: a voice-over station where you can dub your own voice into the film and play Jiminy Cricket or Pinocchio himself!  We hope to see you there.
