Programs

Have you ever daydreamed about making your own short movie, or are you a seasoned youth video producer?  Are you curious about how media is constructed, and think about its effect on society?  No matter your experience level, we have programs and resources designed to help you become the savvy filmmaker and media consumer you’ve always wanted to be, and to keep honing your skills along the way.

Summer Visions Film Institute for Youth

Write, direct, act in, and produce your own short films in this annual two-week summer institute at Templeton Secondary School. Get creative while learning the technical skills required to bring your stories to life, working with experienced mentors, instructors and professional filmmakers to gain from their wide range of expertise. At the end of the summer, show off your film on the big screen during the final Gala and Awards Ceremony at Pacific Cinémathèque!

For more information on how you can participate, visit the official Summer Visions website or check out the blog. We have bursaries available for youth experiencing financial need.

Cinema Sunday

Cinema Sunday is an afternoon film program where we show the best modern and classic films for kids!  Clasics like The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Wallace and Gromit draw in movie-lovers of all ages.  Join us on select Sunday afternoons to watch outstanding movies and take part in fun follow-up discussions, activities and games that get you thinking critically and creatively. Our goal is to introduce you to some awesome new films, treasured classics and other favourites — movies that keep you thinking and talking long after you leave the theatre.

National Media Education Week

National Media Education Week, now going into its fourth year, is a week-long series of workshops, events, and film screenings dedicated to media literacy studies. Our upcoming session will run from November 2 – 6 2009, and will focus on global citizenship in the digital age.

Events will include a 5 night symposium for young video producers, a workshop for Social Justice 12 students and teachers, and a public, and an all-ages screening of Rip: A Remix Manifesto.

Face BC

Face BC is a collaborative project of Pacific Cinémathèque, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Portrait Gallery of Canada, and the Multiculturalism program of Citizenship and Immigration Canada that presents a mosaic of British Columbia’s diversity and depth. It has brought together youth from across the province in creating digital video portraits of themselves, their families, their friends, and their communities. Running over four terms in 2008 and 2009, the Pacific Cinémathèque Education Department team traveled to rural and urban areas across the province to facilitate digital filmmaking workshops in which participants told their own stories as video portraits.
